General
Joni Shagrin is an old campaigner and a retired Queen's Guard. He is wide and hard with his few thin hairs more white than not (TFoH, Ch. 1).
He is one of the few former soldiers with a family. He has caring daughters and grandchildren (TFoH, Ch. 1).
Despite having been attacked during Siuan, Leane and Min's flight from Kore Springs, Joni thinks that they are having some sort of trouble and need to be rescued. Bryne is sure that, once they find the girls, Joni will want him to turn them over to his daughters to look after (TFoH, Ch. 12). After finding out about their real identities, Joni looks as if he is about to swallow his tongue every time he sees Siuan or Leane (TFoH, Ch. 28).
Timeline
- He was the Senior Bannerman of the Queen's Guards (TFoH, Ch. 1).
- He and two other men escort Siuan, Leane and Min to Bryne for their trial in Kore Springs. Afterwards, he is to take them to the manor, but he is attacked by Logain on the way. Despite a sore head and the fact that his grandchildren are set to nurse him, he joins Bryne when he sets out after the girls (TFoH, Ch. 1).
- In the Lugard inn named The Wagon Seat, Joni informs Bryne about the women heading west. He says that he talked to two merchant's guards who used to be in the Queen's Guards, and found out that "Mara" (Siuan) wanted a job singing in The Good Night’s Ride. The two fellows also told him about Gaebril's actions in Andor (TFoH, Ch. 12).
- He rides with the others into Salidar. After Bryne agrees to lead the Aes Sedai's army, he sends Joni out to go recruiting in Ebou Dar (TFoH, Ch. 28).
