Joni Shagrin is an old campaigner and a retired Queen's Guard. He is wide and hard with his few thin hairs more white than not (TFoH, Ch. 1).
He is one of the few former soldiers with a family. He has caring daughters and grandchildren (TFoH, Ch. 1).
Despite having been attacked during Siuan, Leane and Min's flight from Kore Springs, Joni thinks that they are having some sort of trouble and need to be rescued. Bryne is sure that, once they find the girls, Joni will want him to turn them over to his daughters to look after (TFoH, Ch. 12).
