General

As the Dark One gains more freedom, it is possible that some mindless parts of him could escape, and drift up, to touch the pattern, at which they will twist it, causing terrible things to happen (TSR, Ch. 3). At first, they just affected ta'veren, but as time goes on, the events are seen more widely and rumours of strange occurences spread (LoC, Ch. 3).

Quotes

“As the seals holding the Dark One’s prison weaken, it may be inevitable that a . . . miasma . . . will escape even while he is still held. Like bubbles rising from the things rotting on the bottom of a pond. But these bubbles will drift through the Pattern until they attach to a thread and burst.” (Moiraine, The Shadow Rising, Chapter 3)
