General

Jonan Adley was an Asha'man soldier from Altara. He was lanky and maybe four years older than Rand with thick black eyebrows (LoC, Ch. 11; ACoS, Ch. 7).

He was one of the first to join Rand, meaning he came on his own account and not because Taim's recruiting parties happened to convince him (LoC, Ch. 11, TPoD, Ch. 24).

He was barely strong enough to make a gateway (ACoS, Ch. 7).

Timeline

  • He was already at the farm when Rand takes Taim there to test the men. He was one of the first who are able to learn (LoC, Ch. 11).
  • He returned to the Sun Palace to report to Rand. The army had arrived at the hillforts of Illian sooner than expected, because Weiramon left the foot soldiers behind and pressed hard. The day before, they ran into a group of Shaido, but they were easily defeated for the lack of channeling Wise Ones. They began to attack Illian and Sammael countered. Rand then gathered him and the other present Asha'man in to strike at Illian (ACoS, Ch. 41).
  • Adley walks in on Min in her bath to deliver a letter from Rand (TPoD, Ch. 27).
  • Rand Traveled with his party, including Adley, to the north of Illian (TPoD, Ch. 21).
  • He accompanied Rand and the others to the northern part of Altara to fight the Seanchan (TPoD, Ch. 22).
  • During the final battle against the Seanchan, Adley lets saidin slip and kills not only the Amadicians he was aiming at, but also some of Ailil's and Anaiyella's men. He would have been with the Defenders, had he not slipped, but Rand wanted to have him under his eyes where he could watch him. He is killed when Rand himself loses control of saidin through Callandor (TPoD, Ch. 24).
  • Min told Rand about how Adley had walked in to deliver Rand's letter when she was in her bath and not shy about getting an eyeful. She intended to provoke Rand's jealousy, but instead she reminded him of having killed one of his first followers (TPoD, Ch. 27).

Quotes

"Eben and I began destroying the first palisades soon as we arrived," Adley went on. "Weiramon didn't much like that; I think he would have stopped us, but he was afraid to. Anyway, we began setting fire to the logs and blowing holes in the walls, but before we more than started, Sammael came. A man channeling saidin, at least, and a lot stronger than Eben or me. As strong as you, my Lord Dragon, I'd say." (Adley to Rand; A Crown of Swords, Chapter 41)
