Junior Member Summer Camp 2011
A Summer [Camp] Review
Author: Nandi el'Shahir
As the weather turns colder (for most of us) and the warm days of summer are turning to memory, we remember our JM summer event, which took place between July 7, 2011 - August 10, 2011. Novices and Accepted took the oppurtunity to mingle with the Recruits and Soldiers in the Camp Forum.
The councilors (Alyria Sedai, Aloren Sedai, and Jeffan Gaidin) oversaw the camp, making sure things ran smoothly. They have yet to confirm or deny any rumor of their involvement in any of the mischievous activities that occurred at camp.
The Boys and Girls Bunk Houses were dusted out, the lake’s dock was tethered down again, and the Mess Hall was scrubbed clean for the arrival of the campers. Not to mention the Senior Member Ajahs and Companies planned camp activities that were well received.
The Blues held their story time by the campfire, with their breathtaking edition of “Labyrinth”. A few singed fingers, but no harm done. Greens held warder try-outs, testing for Strength, Agility, Wit, Mac-Guyvering, and Swagger. The Yellows did their version of capture the flag, but as a debate over what was the best kind of chocolate. Reds gave the campers vital survival skills they might need. The Whites busted out their portable lab and got the campers to do some bubble testing. Grays gave the campers hands on “craft” projects – challenging them to use more than just glitter and glue guns. And the Browns gave campers an archaeological dig, scrounging up possible “historical artifacts” from the Age of Legends. San d'ma Shadar gave away free candy from inside a questionable looking cave. And Val'Cueran had a mini-quest (think Monty Python) for the campers and set up a barber shop that offered uniform VC haircuts.
The Summer Camp offered swimming lessons and general lake side frivolity; fireside stories and marshmallow roasting; and the usual camp arts and crafts (that may have contained a little too much glitter).
And of course, no summer camp would be complete without a competition, Girls vs. Boys. The girls out stripped the boys in points, winning 40 points to 22.5. Anything from bribing, to offerings, to even stories and haiku's won campers points.
Rounding out the experience, campers got their groove on in the “End of Summer Dance”.
