Along the Borderlands, keeps are run by two servants, equal in rank, though with different duties, the shambayan and Shatayan.

In Fal Dara, the Shambayan, Ronan had few duties apart from ceremonial ones and acting as Agelmar's secretary, as Elansu the shatayan left little to him (TGH, Ch. 2), but elsewhere, the duties are more extensive, keeping the keep and lord supplied and generally running the household.

In Ghealdan, Faile employs Basel Gill as their shambayan and he claims it is little different to running the Queen's Blessing (TPoD, Ch. 9).
