Barney Harris as Matrim Cauthon

Greetings dear reader, and thank you for returning to my next installment of Where They Came From. I’m going to take this moment to say that Matrim “Mat” Cauthon is probably my personal favorite character in the series. To me he always seemed the perfect representation of an underdog hero on the rise. To this end I am very excited, and hopeful, with the casting choice of Barney Harris to represent him in the upcoming series. Let’s take a look together at the rise of Harris in the platform of modern media.

Filmography

Barney Harris is a London born actor, musician, model, and social media influencer. In 2015 he played a small yet plot-focused role in All Roads Lead to Rome. He played Tyler, the bad boy source of affection for the character Summer. Summer and the character Carmen, had a plot to evade their mother and son (respectively) when they stole a car and booked it to Rome. Harris’ character was not present in most of the film, but was an instrumental part of this plotline. Tyler was described as ultimately selfish, so without context I can only assume he offered the literary trope of an ultimatum to Summer to keep their relationship going. I’ll personally have to give this a watch now, even though RomComs aren’t generally in my wheelhouse.

Just before work began on WoT, Harris played the role of Danny in a Drama called Brighton Beach. The basic synopsis is, “An intimate study of a young Russian-American doctor’s unraveling.” The more I dug to find out more, the more Brighton Beach got tangled with Brighton Beach Memoirs of 1986, and a German Independent Film called Minyan which is set in Brighton Beach. My personal thought is that due to the Pandemic, information regarding Brighton Beach, as well as other lower budget media, hasn’t had a good chance to be reviewed and released to the masses. That being said if you do by chance stumble upon it then watch it. It will probably give you a good idea of Harris’ more current acting style.

I may be a fool, but I intend to be a live fool.

Well after my research I feel as though I can get behind Harris acting as Mat. I believe he can certainty portray the mischievous, yet good and gentle-hearted nature of Young Master Cauthon. What of you, dear reader? What are your thoughts? I am excited to find out.
