Condensed Timeline

Perrin's Journey

The Eye of the World

The first time we see Perrin is when Padan Fain shows up at Emond's Field the night before Bel Tine. (TEotW, Ch. 3) Later, he is part of the original group that leaves the Two Rivers with Moiraine and Lan, heading first towards Baerlon, and then onwards past Shadar Logoth to Caemlyn. (TEotW, Ch. 10; Ch. 11; Ch. 12; Ch. 13) While in Baerlon, like Rand and Mat, Perrin has dreams about Ba'alzamon, marking him as one whom the Dark One wishes dead. (TEotW, Ch. 14)

Once having reached Shadar Logoth, Perrin goes with Rand and Mat to look around. They meet Mordeth, but manage to escape with their lives. That night, when Trollocs appear, Perrin is separated from the others by Mashadar. He later finds Egwene. (TEotW, Ch. 18; Ch. 19; Ch. 20; Ch. 22)

Perrin and Egwene decide to set off for Caemlyn, hoping to meet the others there. On the way, they encounter a man named Elyas and a pack of wolves. Elyas informs them that if they keep going as they are, they will miss Caemlyn by a long shot, so Perrin and Egwene end up traveling with Elyas. Along the way, Perrin learns that Elyas can speak to wolves, and the Wolfbrother informs Perrin that he can, as well. (TEotW, Ch. 22; Ch. 23)

Perrin, Egwene and Elyas end up stumbling upon a camp of Tinkers. They travel with them for several days before parting from the Tuatha'an. (TEotW, Ch. 25; Ch. 27) Later, the three of them are attacked by ravens, but they find an abandoned stedding, where they take refuge. There, however, they are found by a group of Whitecloaks. There is a fight, and Perrin kills two Whitecloaks. One of Elyas's wolf friends, Hopper, is also killed. Because of the two dead Whitecloaks, Egwene and Perrin are taken prisoner as Darkfriends. (TEotW, Ch. 29; Ch. 30)

While with the Whitecloaks, Perrin and Egwene are treated very harshly, since they are supposedly Darkfriends. Luckily for them, Moiraine, Lan and Nynaeve appear from their own travels to rescue them. They all ride on towards Caemlyn, where they find Rand and Mat. Finally, the whole group has been reunited. (TEotW, Ch. 30; Ch. 38; Ch. 41)

After the reunited group exchanges information from all sides, Moiraine decides that they must go to the Eye of the World. With an Ogier named Loial to lead the way, they travel through the Ways towards Fal Dara, Shienar. Once having gotten this far, they head for the Blight, where they hope to find The Eye of the World. (TEotW, Ch. 42-Ch. 48)

They finally find the Eye of the World and the Green Man, only to also encounter two of the Forsaken, Aginor and Balthamel. Balthamel is killed by the Green Man, who is killed in turn, and Aginor is killed when he follows Rand. Lan, Mat, Perrin, and Loial go into the Eye of the World and find a broken seal of the Dark One's prison, the Dragon banner and Horn of Valere. (TEotW, Ch. 49; Ch. 50; Ch. 52)

The Great Hunt

Back in Fal Dara, Perrin spends his time doing small tasks until events start to pick up again. When the Horn of Valere and Mat's ruby dagger are stolen, and the Amyrlin Seat arrives, he is asked to go with the party that will track down the stolen items. He agrees (TGH, Ch. 3; Ch. 8). On the journey south, Perrin and Mat learn that Rand is the Dragon Reborn and begin to avoid him. The next morning, Rand, Hurin and Loial have disappeared. Without Hurin, their sniffer, to follow the trail of the thieves, Perrin's sharpened sense of smell is a good replacement. (TGH, Ch. 11; Ch. 14)

They continue to journey south. Nothing of much consequence happens, with the exception of running into an Aiel man named Urien who is searching for "He Who Comes With the Dawn." Perrin and Mat suspect that this might be Rand (TGH, Ch. 28).

Finally, Perrin, Mat, and the Shienarans reach Cairhien, where they are reunited with Rand, Hurin and Loial. They learn that Rand and the others had found the Horn of Valere and the ruby dagger, only to have them stolen back. When Hurin learns that the Horn of Valere is in Lord Barthanes' manor, some of the others go in to find it, but return empty handed (TGH, Ch. 30; Ch. 31; Ch. 32). The whole group travels to Falme by Portal Stone, losing four months in the process. Once there, Perrin, along with the others, confronts both the Seanchan and the Whitecloaks and comes out victorious (TGH, Ch. 37; Ch. 41; Ch. 44 - Ch. 47).

The Dragon Reborn

The Dragon Reborn begins in the winter, with Perrin, Rand, Moiraine, Lan, Min, Loial, and the Shienarans in the Mountains of Mist. When Trollocs attack the camp, he fights along with the others. (TDR, Ch. 1Ch. 5) When Rand leaves the Mountains of Mist on his own, Perrin, Moiraine, Lan, and Loial follow him into Ghealdan (TDR, Ch. 7). They travel through Ghealdan, soon arriving at a village named Remen. There, Perrin finds that an Aielman has been taken captive and is hanging in a cage. Perrin, hating to see a man in a cage, lets him free. Perrin and the Aielman, Gaul, fight and kill the Whitecloaks that attack them. A girl sees but doesn't say anything. Perrin, Moiraine, Lan, and Loial flee on a ship, but the girl jumps on board as well. Perrin learns that her name is Zarine, though she wishes to be called Faile (TDR, Ch. 33Ch. 35)

Soon, Perrin and the others reach Illian. While eating at an inn, they are attacked by six Gray Men. After they have been killed, traces of Darkhounds are found. Later, when Perrin, Moiraine, Lan, Loial, and Faile are chased by Darkhounds, they kill them as well (TDR, Ch. 42; Ch. 43]). When Faile is caught by a dream ter'angreal, Perrin, having fallen in love with Faile, goes into the Wolf Dream and saves her (TDR, Ch. 53Ch. 55).

The Shadow Rising

Soon after everyone is all back together, Perrin and Faile are attacked by a bubble of evil in the Stone of Tear. Perrin's axe tries to kill them, but he protects Faile and eventually the axe returns to normal (TSR, Ch. 2).

Perrin has lately been hearing rumors about the Two Rivers and wishes to return home. However, he does not want Faile to go with him since it would put her in danger. In order to get Faile to stay behind, he puts up with Berelain flirting with him, knowing that it will anger Faile. However, this plan backfires on his when Faile tricks Loial into agreeing to take Faile to the Two Rivers by Waygate, which is how Perrin was going to go (TSR, Ch. 13; Ch. 14; Ch. 16).

Two groups end up going through the Waygate; Faile, Loial, Bain, and Chiad in one group, and Perrin and Gaul a little ways behind them. Technically, they are all together, but Perrin is angry at Faile for tricking Loial, and Faile is angry at Perrin for trying to leave her behind (TSR, Ch. 18; Ch. 27).

Eventually, they all reach the Two Rivers. Perrin speaks with Marin and Bran al'Vere, who have a lot to tell him. The Whitecloaks are looking for him, and are convinced he is a Darkfriend. Perrin says that he will give himself up so that they will go away, but Faile is aghast at the suggestion. Perrin is then told that his entire family is dead because of Trollocs. Perrin is in shock but tries to hide it. He also learns that Mat's family and the Luhhans have been taken prisoner by the Whitecloaks. Out of his, Mat and Rand's families, only Abell Cauthon and Tam al'Thor are still free, and they are in hiding (TSR, Ch. 29).

Faile announces that she has had enough, that Perrin must grieve for his family. The others leave, and Perrin cries while Faile holds him (TSR, Ch. 29). Perrin plans to find Tam and Abell and rescue Mat's family and the Luhhans. Marin takes Perrin and his group to the old sickhouse, which is east of the village, and they get another big surprise. There are two Aes Sedai in the Two Rivers: Alanna and Verin. They have been hiding with help from the Women's Circle. They speak for some time, and then Tam and Abell show up (TSR, Ch. 30; Ch. 31). They head towards the Whitecloak camp, picking up other young men on the way, and manage their rescue (TSR, Ch. 32; Ch. 33).

Most of the rest of Perrin's journey consists of him leading men against Trollocs in the Two Rivers. There are a couple of encounters with the Tinkers; the Tuatha'an are attacked by Trollocs and seek shelter in Emond's Field. Aram pledges himself to Perrin and takes up the sword. Near the end, Perrin and Faile marry. Perrin convinces Faile to go for help, knowing that he will probably never see her again. However, Faile does return with help, and the Two Rivers is saved (TSR, Ch. 40Ch. 45; Ch. 53; Ch. 56).

Perrin has Gaul and Neald abduct someone from the Shaido camp and they fortuitously choose Galina. Galina promises by the Oaths to take Faile and the women with her to safety when her business is done, but this is not enough for Perrin. She tells him the Wise Ones drink only water. She tells him that although few Aiel enter the town, there are usually enough that if he went in by gateway, they would get word out, and it would be a slaughter. He instructs her to go back to Faile and tell her that on the day she sees fog on the ridges and hears wolves howl by daylight, she and the others must go to Lady Cairen’s fortress at the north end of the city and hide there (KoD, Prologue).

He meets with Tylee and Mishima, persuading them he is of interest by demonstrating how good his men are with the bow and arrow and then having Grady use the Power. He then shows her the manetheren banner and promises to give up all claim to restoring the nation, which she sees as a good thing for the Seanchan. He tells her his plan is to use forkroot, though he doesn't name it, and that he would need wagonloads of it. Finally, he shows her the note from Suroth that was stolen from Masema (KoD, Ch. 4).

Towers of Midnight

Perrin is dreaming, and in his dream, he is working as a smith making something he is unsure of as Hopper watches. As he works, he thinks about the rumors people are hearing about him and Berelain and how they are not true; he was merely sick and she took care of him. He can not figure out what he is making, but he turns to the water barrels and pulls out what he made before, which is a figurine of Aram. The smithy disappears, and in his dream, he is in the battle where Aram died. In the dream, he turns into a wolf and bites Aram's throat. He wonders why that happened in the dream when it did not happen in real life, but Hopper says he should not worry about it; it is merely a dream. He returns to the smithy and pulls out more figurines, hundreds of them. He wonders what it means, but then he wakes up and finds himself in bed next to Faile.(ToM, Prologue)

Perrin is almost to the Jehannan road with his army and is thinking about all the time they have lost because of the camp becoming sick and the sickness almost killing his Asha'man. He is approached by some riders who would like to join his army. Perrin tells them he does not have money to pay them, but they say food will be enough, so they join Perrin's group. Upon reaching the Jehannan road Perrin finds Fennel waiting. Fennel tells them that due to poor road conditions, Gill and the others had headed towards Lugard thinking that was the best possible way to get to Caemlyn. Fennel was left behind to tell them, and he tells Perrin that he has been waiting there for 5 days. He tells Fennel to go get some food, and he joins Faile. He and Faile talk about how Perrin's army is growing. Faile thinks Perrin did a good job while she was gone, but Perrin feels like he is a failure, and the men need someone better. The scouts show up and tell Perrin there is something he needs to see.(ToM, Ch. 2) They show him an area where the plants look like they have some kind of disease. To Perrin, it smells like there should be dead bodies there, but there are not. Nevarin tells him that it looks like the Blight. They followed the plants and found a town. Masuri tells Perrin this is not a town that belongs there. There is no one there, so Perrin tells the Aes Sedai and Wise Ones to burn as much of it as they can. He lays down and falls asleep entering the Wolf dream. The wolves, including Hopper and Oak Dancer, want Perrin to hunt with them. Perrin is hesitant at first but then joins them. At one point, while he is chasing them, he sees visions: one of Mat and one of Grady and his friends. He rejoins the wolves and catches the scent of a stag. It is a huge stag. They chase it down, and Perrin catches it. Right before he finishes it off, Hopper stops him and tells him the chase is over and that to kill something here is to give it its final death.(ToM, Ch. 4)

Perrin is having a meeting with a larg group of people. The Wise Ones and Aes Sedai tell Perrin they destroyed the whole village as well as every plant that had looked like something from the Blight. They discuss what course to follow deciding to follow after Gill. Edarra suggests trying to learn circles with the Asha'man. Perrin approves, and Grady is ready to try it. They then discuss who to send through gateways first and to where. They decide to get supplies and send out scouts to Cairhien. She scolds Perrin about how he should stay out of matters concerning such things.(ToM, Ch. 6) Shortly after that, Aiel come and tell Perrin that there are White Cloaks on the road ahead of them. Perrin tells him to offer them parley but there is no way they are leaving Gill with them.(ToM, Ch. 7) Perrin is talking with Grady when Grady says he thinks they made a circle. They go over and find that Neald and the Wise Ones have indeed made a circle. Grady tells Perrin that Saidin no longer has the taint and asks Perrin if he can make a trip to the Black Tower to visit his wife and child. Perrin tells him they have things to do but that he will be able to before the end. Dain Bornhald shows up and tells Perrin that the Lord Commander wants to meet with him and that he can bring Aes Sedai. Perrin goes to meet Galad and brings Grady with him as well as the Aes Sedai. Galad accuses him of murder, and Perrin says he wants his people back. Galad challenges Perrin to meet him on the field of battle.(ToM, Ch. 10)

Perrin meets Faile on top of a hill at dusk like she told him to. Faile tells him they are celebrating shanna'har and explains it to him. They talk for a while about whether Perrin is a good leader, and then Faile gets Perrin to open up. He tells Faile about how he felt when she was taken, about how he is afraid of the wolf taking over, and even about Hopper. In return, Faile told him about being in Malden, and about how they had planned an escape. Perrin apologizes to her, and even feels tears come to his eyes.(ToM, Ch. 16) Perrin enters the Wolf Dream, and Hopper is ready to teach him. Hopper teaches him about not being in the Wolf Dream too strongly and how to follow people. During the training, they come upon a mysterious wall that looks like glass that Hopper describes as wrongness.(ToM, Ch. 18) The scouts from Cairhien return. Edarra tells Perrin they are still without a leader. She tells him stories of Tear and of the Seanchan. She then tells him they went to Andor where there were rumors that a Forsaken had been there until Rand killed him. Perrin tells Balwer to send a message to the Whitecloaks to choose a place and time for battle. After everyone else leaves Balwer tells Perrin that he heard rumors about Rand and the Seanchan are merely rumors.(ToM, Ch. 21) Perrin trains more in the Wolf Dream, and he runs into Slayer who uses some tricks on him and chases him around. After he wakes up, he splits wood to clear his mind and is joined by Elyas with whom he talks about finding the balance between wolf and man.(ToM, Ch. 24)

Perrin is heading towards the place to battle the White cloaks when he realizes the difference between the hammer and the axe. One is to kill while the other can be used to kill or create. He decides to try to avoid the battle. He makes a demonstration of his power with the Asha'man, Wise Ones, and Two Rivers archers. He then asks to meet Galad in a parley. They meet, and Perrin asks for a trial. Galad refuses with no proper judge but then recognizes Morgase. Everyone is shocked to find out that Maigdin is Morgase, but Perrin asks if she is a suitable judge, and Galad says yes. He agrees to have a trial in three days.(ToM, Ch. 26) Perrin sleeps, and in the Wolf Dream, he talks with Hopper about the mysterious wall which he figures out is a dome. He goes into the dome to help out some wolves who are trapped and fighting Slayer. He grabs Sparks and escapes. Slayer doesn't follow.(ToM, Ch. 28) There is a bubble of evil, and Perrin's group is attacked by their own weapons. Perrin asks Galad to give him a few more days to prepare for trial.(ToM, Ch. 29)

Perrin trains with Hopper more. Hopper takes Perrin to Caemlyn and has him train by entering peoples dreams and trying to get out. In Tel'aran'rhiod Perrin encounters a group of wolves gathering around the base of Dragonmount. Hopper tells him something is about to happen, and it will determine if there will be a Last Hunt or the end. Perrin climbs through a storm to the top where he sees Rand. Rand is shrouded in black when a little light appears, then shatters the darkness, and rays of sunshine come down. Perrin and the wolves howl, celebrating that the Last Hunt is about to begin.(ToM, Ch. 30)

Perrin figures out that the dome is what is stopping the Asha'man from being able to travel. He warns them and Faile to be prepared for anything. Perrin has his trial in which he admits to killing the men but tries to explain that the wolves were his friends. Morgase finds him guilty, but rather than sentencing him to death, she uses a loophole to pass judgement to Galad. Galad agrees to wait to pass judgement until after the Last Battle.(ToM, Ch. 34) Perrin, knowing that something is wrong, enters the Wolf Dream to try to get rid of the dome. He goes into the dome with Hopper, Sparks, and Oak Dancer. They are attacked by Slayer, and a battle ensues. Slayer kills Oak Dancer and runs. Perrin chases after him until Sparks signals that he found the ter'angreal responsible for the dome. Perrin heads back to the dome and retreieves the ter'angreal.(ToM, Ch. 35) Perrin heads to Tar Valon in Tel'aran'rhiod to try to gain an advantage.(ToM, Ch. 36) In Tar Valon, the battle goes on for a while. Perrin encounters Egwene and manages to stop Balefire that is woven at them, telling her it's just a weave. He continues his battle with Slayer until Slayer manages to take back the ter'angreal, and then Hopper jumps in and attacks Slayer. Slayer kills Hopper and injures Perrin, but Perrin replenishes his blood and forces Slayer into a nightmare.(ToM, Ch. 37) Perrin and Slayer are in the nightmare, and Slayer is having a harder time than Perrin. In the nightmare, the ground rips open, and there is lava. Perrin throws the ter'angreal into the lava and destroys it. They escape the nightmare, and Perrin wills himself awake.(ToM, Ch. 38)

Perrin starts to work the forge making a horseshoe while thinking about his responsibilities. He throws away the horseshoe and begins to make a hammer, at the same time thinking about being a leader and accepting his role. Neald helps him in the forging of the hammer, first by using saidin to heat the metal, and then by getting Grady and the Wise Ones in a circle and using weaves to make the first power wrought-weapon in hundreds of years. After they are done, he gives Neald and Grady a second to rest, and then has them weave gateways above the Whitecloaks' camp. Someone uses Saidin and Trollocs begin to appear.(ToM, Ch. 40) The Trollocs attack the Whitecloaks, thousands and thousands of them. Perrin's archers continue to put arrows into them while he has the Asha'man focus on the myrddraal. They see Galad and his troops being boxed in, so Perrin rushes down and saves him. Galad comes up with Perrin's punishment, which is to fight in the Last Battle with all of his strength and to pay 500 Gold Crowns to the families of the men he killed. Byar tries to kill Perrin when he catches him off guard but Bornhald saves him.(ToM, Ch. 41)

Perrin does the honors of marrying Morgase and Tallanvor. After the wedding, Mat shows up and asks Perrin to meet him at an inn and also asks to borrow one of his Asha'man.(ToM, Ch. 44) Perrin travels to Caemlyn and meets with Elayne, who is worried Perrin is rebelling against Andor. They make an arrangement where Perrin can be steward of the Two Rivers. Afterwards Perrin meets up with Mat, and they discuss what's happened since they left each other's company. Mat tells Perrin he is married as well as about Moiraine. Perrin agrees to lend him an Asha'man to get him to the Tower of Ghenjei.(ToM, Ch. 47) Perrin sees Mat off and will have Grady make a Gateway to the same spot at noon each day until Mat comes back. Perrin then has the Asha'man and Wise Ones make a circle and open a Gateway to the Field of Merrilor where he will meet Rand.(ToM, Ch. 53)

A Memory of Light

Perrin has arrived at the Field of Merrilor. He and Rand sit in Rand’s tent, laughing into the night. Rand has asked Perrin to tell him again about the siege and battles at the Two Rivers. Perrin and Rand go for a walk through the camp, and stop at the clerks’ tent to speak with Sebban Balwer, who lets them know that Roedran will be attending the meeting. Now, all major rulers will be attending the meeting at the Field of Merrilor. The ground begins to shake and there is thunder, signs of the imminent new Breaking. When the shaking stops, Balwer tells Rand that he suspects Elayne may be up to something as he’s just learned that she was recently awakened by her advisors. Perrin and Rand head to Perrin’s camp to see if they can learn anything about what Elayne might be planning. As they walk, Perrin makes Rand promise that there won’t be any fighting between the groups that have gathered for the meeting (AMoL, Ch. 1).

Perrin and Faile arrive at the pavilion Rand has erected for the meeting at the Field of Merrilor. When Rand reveals his terms for giving his life to save the world: that all rulers sign the Dragon’s Peace, that the White Tower let him break the seals, and that all armies be put under his jurisdiction for the Last Battle—Perrin remains silent. Egwene notes that he is standing close enough to be able to listen as she and Rand argue over the practicality of breaking the seals (AMoL, Ch. 5). Along with Rand and many of the others, Perrin greets Moiraine with joy when she arrives at the Field of Merrilor. When a number of real concerns are brought up regarding the Dragon’s Peace, including that there are no provisions for settling minor disputes that might eventually escalate to all-out war, and that the Aiel have not been included but demand to be, Perrin asks to speak to Rand. Perrin and Rand discuss behind a ward and Perrin suggests to Rand that the Aiel be written into the Dragon’s Peace as enforcers and mediators between other nations. When Rand proposes this to the Aiel and the other rulers, it is eventually accepted. When all of the rulers sign the Dragon’s Peace, Rand has Perrin and Faile sign as well, along with Gawyn and Gareth Bryne, because Rand “seemed to want anyone […] who might rise to a position of leadership to have their names on the document” (AMoL, Ch. 6).

While Elayne and all of the other rulers and commanders begin to plan how to address the ongoing assaults of Shadowspawn in Kandor, Caemlyn, and at Tarwin’s Gap, Perrin warns everyone against trying to retake Caemlyn by using the Ways. When Elayne suggests that they send to the Black Tower for help, he also cautions that Rand is concerned that something strange is happening there. Elayne assigns Perrin to take care of the “logistics” of setting up the Field of Merrilor camp as the centre of their tactical operations. Perrin plans to try to find Loial to see if the Ogier will help at the Last Battle. However, Loial preempts him and shows up at the Field of Merrilor with three dozen other Ogier to tell Elayne that all of the Ogier will fight alongside the humans. Perrin greets Loial (AMoL, Ch. 7).

Elayne asks Perrin to take command over all of the supplies for the armies. Her plan is that if Perrin coordinates supply runs, he can use those supply runs as a cover for moving the Horn of Valere from Tar Valon, where the Shadow has been trying to locate it. Perrin tells her that he cannot do this task, because he needs to be with Rand at the Last Battle, recalling Min’s viewing that Rand will die if Perrin is not there. Faile offers to to do it in his stead, and Perrin backs her (AMoL, Ch. 7).

Perrin and his followers go with Elayne to rescue Caemlyn from the Trollocs. Perrin gets his men positioned in Braem Wood. The plan is to draw the Trollocs out of Caemlyn to fight in the forest (AMoL, Ch. 8). Elayne’s forces manage to draw the Trollocs outside of Caemlyn by burning much of the city (AMoL, Ch. 8; AMoL, Ch. 10). Then, Perrin leads a force of light cavalry to harry the Trollocs outside of Caemlyn. Galad and Aranda are with him (AMoL, Ch. 10). Although the Trollocs are slow to take the bait, eventually they chase Perrin and the others to Braem Wood, where the rest of Elayne’s forces are positioned (AMoL, Ch. 10). Elayne’s forces, Perrin included, proceed to lay numerous ambushes for the Trollocs over the next several days (AMoL, Ch. 10; AMoL, Ch. 12). One evening in Braem Wood, Perrin approaches Edarra to ask if she knows of any way he can enter Tel’aran’rhiod in the flesh. He has been realizing that this is how Slayer is so strong in the Wolf Dream. Edarra tells Perrin that he must not do such a thing, and that no Wise One will tell him how to do it. She warns him that those that enter Tel’aran’rhiod in the flesh lose a part of what makes them human, and might also end their thread in the Pattern so that they can never be reborn again (AMoL, Ch. 12).

Perrin takes leave of his people, knowing that he has to enter Tel’aran’rhiod in the flesh to kill Slayer and deactivate the dreamspike that is preventing travel to or from the Black Tower. Before he does so, he passes command onto Tam, making Tam a Lord and Steward of the Two Rivers and announcing that if Perrin dies, Tam will succeed him (AMoL, Ch. 12). Neald makes a gateway for Perrin to the Field of Merrilor. Before he goes through it, Bornhald pulls him aside and tells him that it was Ordeith, and not Trollocs, that killed his family, feeling that Perrin should know the truth (AMoL, Ch. 13). At the Field of Merrilor, Gaul insists on going with Perrin to Tel'aran'rhiod, saying that Perrin will have to kill him to make him stay behind. Perrin goes to Rand, who is scouting the Blight, and asks Rand for help entering Tel’aran’rhiod in the flesh, thinking that Rand might have memories of how to do so. Rand warns him about the dangers, but still creates a gateway to Tel’aran’rhiod for him. Rand also agrees to have an Asha’man open a gateway for him every day at dawn so that he can return when he is done. Perrin says goodbye to everyone and hugs Rand, and then he and Gaul go through the gateway (AMoL, Ch. 13).

Once in Tel’aran’rhiod, Perrin and Gaul go to the Black Tower to search for the dreamspike. As they scout around, Cyndane appears and she and Perrin briefly talk before Cyndane vanishes. Perrin and Gaul continue to search for the dreamspike, and come across two Asha’man who are also there in the flesh, sent by Taim to keep watch. Cyndane appears again and tells Perrin that the two Asha’man have been turned to the Shadow, and explains the process to him. The Asha’man are drinking wine, so Lanfear adds forkroot to it so that they pass out. Perrin is then able to get past them and find the dreamspike, and Cyndane shows him how to turn it off. They are just in time to save Androl and his group, who are now able to use a gateway to escape Taim (AMoL, Ch. 14).

With the dreamspike now taken care of, Perrin turns his attention to Slayer. He plans to wait at the Black Tower to see if turning off the dreamspike will bring Slayer to investigate. If it doesn’t, Perrin and Gaul will go searching for him (AMoL, Ch. 14). They search for an indeterminable amount of time. There are many wolves around, and they want to know if Perrin is going to lead them in the Last Hunt. None of the wolves have seen Slayer recently, but they warn him that Moonhunter (Lanfear/Cyndane) is seeking Perrin in the Dream, and that another Forsaken, Heartseeker, is there as well. Perrin and Gaul go to Merrilor, where Heartseeker was last seen, and see an ugly woman snooping around in Ituralde’s tent. Perrin follows her around and catches her invading someone’s dreams. When Heartseeker notices him, they fight, and she blames him for previously foiling her plans. When Heartseeker runs away, Cyndane appears and tells Perrin that Heartseeker is Graendal, and also that the dreams she was invading were Davram Bashere’s. Cyndane also makes a comment about her and Perrin “being together,” which insinuates that she has shifted her attentions from Rand to Perrin (AMoL, Ch. 22).

Perrin and Gaul find Graendal speaking to several people in their dreams, but she disappears before Perrin can attack (AMoL, Ch. 25).

Perrin and Gaul reach Shayol Ghul. The wolves alert Perrin to Slayer’s presence, and Perrin finds him at the Pit of Doom about to kill Rand, who is battling Moridin. Perrin deflects the attack, and when Slayer disappears, Perrin and Gaul follow him. While Perrin fights Slayer, Gaul and the wolves fight Slayer’s Samma N’Sei and Talentless. Slayer returns to the waking world, and Perrin proceeds to alter the minds of the two Samma N’Sei who have been left behind. When Lanfear appears and tells them that the two Samma N’Sei have been turned to the Shadow, Gaul kills them, and Lanfear then Heals Perrin and Gaul before disappearing. Perrin goes back into the Pit of Doom. He can see Rand and Moridin still battling while Moiraine and Nynaeve look on. Since he can see them, he hopes that Nynaeve will be able to at least hear him in return. It turns out that she can. In order to protect Rand from Slayer and the Forsaken, Perrin sets up the dreamspike to operate around the Bore. He manages to tell Nynaeve that if she needs to Travel, she will have to leave the cavern. When Perrin exits the cavern, he learns from Gaul that two hours have passed because of the Bore’s effect on time. Perrin asks the wolves to guard the entrance to the Pit of Doom against Slayer, and they agree. Perrin also gets the wolves to set up a line of communication, with wolves posted throughout the Borderlands so they can let him know if Slayer comes back (AMoL, Ch. 25).

Perrin and Gaul have been surveying all of the battlefields, though forces are retreating or moving so quickly that there is little they can see. Perrin is starting to feel the fatigue of having been in Tel’aran’rhiod too long. Elyas sends word that Graendal has been spotted, although Perrin does not recognize Elyas in his wolf form at the time. They find Graendal at Ituralde’s tent at Shayol Ghul. She opens a gateway and steps into Ituralde’s tent in the waking world, and Perrin suddenly realizes that she has been doing something to corrupt the Great Captains. Perrin knows that he needs to get a message to someone, but he can’t leave Rand unprotected from Slayer. Perrin finally recognizes Elyas when Elyas offers to take the message for him. Suddenly, Slayer attacks, and Perrin and Gaul prepare to defend Rand (AMoL, Ch. 30).

Perrin and Slayer fight throughout Tel’aran’rhiod, and Perrin can tell that the Pattern is getting weaker. Suddenly, something changes, and Perrin is not able to manipulate things in Tel’aran’rhiod like he usually can. He can’t seem to think straight. Hit by one of Slayer’s arrows and on the verge of being defeated, he manages to shift away (AMoL, Ch. 33). Although he has now shifted away from Slayer, Perrin is still too weak to manipulate Tel’aran’rhiod, and cannot even make Slayer’s arrow disappear from his shoulder. He tries to reach out to the wolves, but they seem to be afraid of him. Lanfear appears and tells him she is very disappointed in him, and for a reason Perrin can’t fathom (compulsion), he is intensely ashamed of himself. Perrin tries to reach Merrilor, hoping he will be able to return to the waking world through a gateway. He hopes that the wolves will be able to protect Rand, and passes out (AMoL, Ch. 34). He can feel himself dying and somehow manages to will himself to awaken from Tel’aran’rhiod on his own, without the use of a gateway. He reappears in the waking world, almost dead, just outside the camp at Merrilor; it is the day before the forces of the Light begin their last stand. He is found by Haral Luhhan, who takes him to the hospital in Mayene (AMoL, Ch. 36; AMoL, Ch. 37). He has been in Tel'aran'rhiod for weeks AMoL, Epilogue).

Perrin wakes up in Mayene and desperately wants to return to Tel’aran’rhiod in the flesh. However, he is utterly exhausted. He tries to get up but Janina won’t let him. He tells Janina, Uno, and Berelain that Rand still fights and that time is distorted at the Bore, so that only a day at most has passed for Rand. Berelain tells Perrin that Faile’s caravan was destroyed by a bubble of evil, but when Perrin learns that Faile’s body was not found, he insists that she must still be alive. He falls asleep, and as he does, he sees three paths: one to normal sleep, one that is his usual path to Tel’aran’rhiod, and now a third path that will lead him to Tel’aran’rhiod in the flesh. He wants to take the third path, but knows that he has to let himself recover or he will die. Because of this, he opts to just fall asleep so that he can rest properly (AMoL, Ch. 37).

Perrin awakens again in Mayene after the fighting at Merrilor is over. Chiad is in his room, and tells him that while Merrilor has been won, Rand still battles the Dark One. Chiad asks about Gaul, and Perrin assures her that he was fine the last Perrin saw him. Perrin tells her that he needs to return to Tel’aran’rhiod to help Gaul protect Rand, and Chiad promises to try to find an Aes Sedai to take away Perrin’s tiredness. Master Luhhan comes to check on him, and Perrin tells him that he’s made a mistake by pushing himself too far. Master Luhhan tells Perrin that if ever there was a time to push, it is now. Perrin tells Master Luhhan that he’s pretty sure Padan Fain and Slayer will both try to kill Rand, and Master Luhhan tells him that he’d better make sure that doesn’t happen, then. Chiad returns with Masuri, who takes away Perrin’s tiredness. Perrin manages to re-enter Tel’aran’rhiod in the flesh on his own (AMoL, Ch. 44). Perrin finds Gaul and the wolves fighting Slayer at Shayol Ghul. Only about two hours have passed for Gaul (AMoL, Ch. 45). Resuming his own fight with Slayer, Perrin lets go of the division he has erected within himself between man and wolf. When Slayer vanishes, Perrin follows himself to Shayol Ghul in the waking world, and he and Slayer fight back and forth across the two realms. Perrin finally manages to kill Slayer (AMoL, Ch. 46).

After killing Slayer, Perrin learns from a Maiden in the waking world that all leadership in the battle at Shayol Ghul is gone, though soldiers and Aiel still fight and do what they can. The Light appears to have lost the battle here, and the Darkhounds are taking down many of the remaining fighters. Perrin shifts a group of Aiel into Tel’aran’rhiod with him, and then reappears with them in the waking world at the foot of the path to the Pit of Doom. He tells the Aiel that they will hold the Darkhounds away from Rand. Suddenly, they hear the Horn of Valere—and Perrin realizes that not all of the Heroes are human. The spirits of the wolves who have died are waiting for Perrin to lead them in the Last Hunt against the Darkhounds (AMoL, Ch. 46.

Perrin and Mat are reunited on the battlefield at Shayol Ghul. Mat tells Perrin that Faile was last seen leading Trollocs away so that Olver could escape with the Horn of Valere; Perrin hopes that this means she is still alive (AMoL, Ch. 46). With the attacking Darkhounds under control and Mat taking care of Mashadar, Perrin goes back to Tel’aran’rhiod. He finds Gaul and brings him back to the waking world, in the Two Rivers camp at Merrilor. His men are thrilled to see him. He desperately wants to search for Faile, but no matter how difficult it is, he knows he has to return to Rand (AMoL, Ch. 47). Perrin returns to Tel’aran’rhiod and finds Cyndane at the Pit of Doom. She uses compulsion on Perrin and directs him to kill Moiraine while she kills Nynaeve; then, she says, she will save the Dark One and make Lews Therin bow before her. Perrin resists the compulsion by holding onto his love for Faile and his ability to manipulate Tel’aran’rhiod, and he kills Cyndane. He was not, however, able to fully erase the compulsion and is horrified that deep down he can sense love for Cyndane (AMoL, Ch. 49).

Back in the waking world with the Last Battle over, Perrin says goodbye to the spirit wolves, who return to the wolf dream. He finds Nynaeve, Moiraine, and Flinn in a tent with Rand and Moridin, who are alive but fading quickly. No Heailng seems to affect them. Perrin learns that Egwene has died and hugs Nynaeve. Perrin tells the others that they need to let Min, Elayne, and Aviendha know about Rand (AMoL, Epilogue).

Perrin has been searching for Faile to no avail and breaks down weeping. He returns to Tel’aran’rhiod and runs as a wolf in an attempt to forget his pain. However, he then sees a tiny falcon in the dream, near death, and knows that Faile is alive. He leaves Tel’aran’rhiod, finds her amongst the bodies, and brings her to Nynaeve (AMoL, Epilogue).

Strengths and Talents

The Wolf Dream

Main article: Perrin's Dreams
  • Wolves are linked to Tel'aran'rhiod, which they call the "Wolf Dream", and therefore they partially live in the World of Dreams. Because of this, Wolfbrothers also have the ability to enter Tel'aran'rhiod.
  • Oftentimes in the wolf dream, Perrin will meet Hopper, a wolf he met in early in his travels, who is now dead. Hopper sometimes helps Perrin to find what he is looking for. Once, Perrin went to Tel'aran'rhiod to find Faile. Other times, he is following Slayer, or searching for Shadowspawn.
  • Like Egwene, Perrin often dreams of the future while he sleeps. His dreams, however, are seen through "windows" in the Wolf Dream.

Relationships with Other Characters

Rand, an old friend of Perrin's, considers Perrin to be one of the few people that he can still trust. Despite the fact that he, at one point, wonders whether Perrin's loyalty lies with him or Faile, (ACoS, Ch. 7) he still trusts him. Back when they were all still in Emond's Field, Perrin would often be drawn, along with Rand, into Mat's schemes.

Perrin loves Faile more than anyone in the world. When they first met, he didn't like her all that much, but his feelings soon turned around. He does everything that he can to protect her, and in TSR they get married. After Faile is kidnapped by the Shaido, all he can think about is rescuing her.

Loial is a good friend of Perrin's. They are tied together by many events, right from their first meeting to the present. Loial accompanies Perrin and Faile to the Two Rivers, and does everything he can to help Perrin.

Like most other men, Perrin doesn't trust Aes Sedai very much. He knows some of them, like Verin, better than others and therefore has a little bit more trust in them, but mainly doesn't like to be around them. In TSR, when Alanna thinks about bonding Perrin, Faile threatens Alanna with her life.

Aram has sworn himself to Perrin and Faile, but Perrin has never been a big fan of Aram. Early on, he thinks that Aram smiles too much, and is annoyed that Egwene pays so much attention to him. After the events in The Shadow Rising he puts up with Aram, but although Aram is devoted to him, Perrin still doesn't like him very much.

Moridin wants him dead and has instructed the other Forsaken to hunt Perrin and Mat and kill them (KoD, Prologue).

Luc and Isam both hate Perrin excessively, although Isam also enjoys the challenge Perrin offers. Aside from Perrin, Isam doesn't much care who he hunts (AMoL, Prologue).

Rand notes that all of the people in Perrin's camp, including the Aiel and the Aes Sedai, appear to be loyal to him (AMoL, Ch. 1).

Visions and Prophecies

"The strongest thing I see about the big, curly-haired fellow are a wolf, and a broken crown, and trees flowering all around him." Min to Rand about Perrin (TEotW, Ch. 15)

"You know I've read you, Egwene. I don't understand most of it - I almost never do - but I see things I am sure link you to Rand, and Perrin, and Mat, and - yes, even Galad, the Light help you for a fool. How can any of that happen if the Seanchan take you off across the ocean?" Min to Egwene (TGH, Ch. 42)

"An Aielman in a cage. A Tuatha'an with a sword. A falcon and a hawk, perching on your shoulders. Both female, I think. And all the rest of course. What is always there. Darkness swirling 'round you, and" (Min to Perrin; TDR, Ch. 6)

"One more thing. If you meet a woman - the most beautiful woman you've ever seen - run!" (Min to Perrin; TDR, Ch. 6)

"Perrin with a falcon on his shoulder, and Perrin with a hawk. Only the hawk held a leash in her talons - Egwene was somehow convinced both hawk and falcon were female and the hawk was trying to fasten it around Perrin's neck. That made her shiver even now; she did not like dreams about leashes. And that dream of Perrin with a beard! leading a huge pack of wolves that stretched as far as the eye could see." (Egwene's dream about Perrin; TDR, Ch. 25)

"She had dreamed of Perrin with a wolf, and with a falcon, and a hawk and the falcon and the hawk fighting of Perrin running from someone deadly, and Perrin stepping willingly over the edge of a towering cliff while saying, 'It must be done. I must learn to fly before I reach the bottom.' There had been one dream of an Aiel, and she thought that had to do with Perrin, too, but she was not sure." (Egwene's dream about Perrin; TDR, Ch. 37)

"Why should Perrin have a falcon on his shoulder, and what was important about him choosing between that axe he wore now and a blacksmith's hammer?" (Egwene's dream about Perrin; TDR, Ch. 48)

"A wolf" she was sure it was Perrin, though - fighting a man whose face kept changing." (Egwene's dream about Perrin; TSR, Ch. 11)

"Perrin, lounging with Faile in his lap, kissing her while she played with the short-cut beard that he wore in the dream. Behind them two banners waved, a red wolf's head and a crimson eagle. A man in a bright yellow coat stood near to Perrin's shoulder, a sword strapped to his back; in some way she knew that he was a Tinker, though no Tinker would even touch a sword. And every bit of it except the beard seemed important. The banners, Faile kissing Perrin, even the Tinker. Every time he moved closer to Perrin it was as if a chill of doom shot through everything." (Egwene's dream about Perrin; TFoH, Ch. 15)

"Perrin came and stood before her, a wolf lying at his feet, a hawk and a falcon perched on his shoulders glaring at each other over his head. Seemingly unaware of them, he kept trying to throw away that axe of his, until finally he ran, the axe floating through the air, chasing him. Again Perrin; he turned away from a Tinker and ran, faster and faster though she called for him to come back." (Egwene's dream about Perrin; LoC, Ch. 15)

He’s become harder, Rand thought, but somehow he hasn’t lost that innocence of his. Not completely. To Rand, that seemed a marvelous thing. A wonder, like a pearl discovered in a trout. Perrin was strong, but his strength hadn’t broken him.” (Rand; AMoL, Prologue)
