General

Turak of the House Aladon is a High Lord from Seanchan. His head is shaved and the first two fingernails on his hands are lacquered blue. His nails are an inch long. He usually wears a long blue robe (TGH, Ch. 29).

High Lord Turak is of the Blood, Seanchan nobility and was twelfth in line for the Crystal Throne (TGH, Ch. 34). He leads the Seanchan, descendants of the army Artur Hawkwing sent across the Aryth Ocean a thousand years earlier, in their attempt to recapture the Westlands. His army created a bridgehead on the peninsula of Toman Head and defeated all armies the locals sent against them.

At first glance Turak seems to be an arrogant, decadent man but underneath he is hard. His army is defeated in the fall of 998 NE by a half a legion of Whitecloaks, the Heroes of the Horn and the violence unleashed by Rand and Ba'alzamon. Turak is killed in the battle, as much by bad luck as by Rand. His army retreats to the Sea Folk Islands to regroup.

Timeline

  • In 998 NE Bayle Domon's ship, the Spray, is captured by the Seanchan off the coast of Toman Head. Domon is lead before High Lord Turak, who leads the Forerunners in their attempt to take back the lands Artur Hawkwing once owned. Domon asks permission to leave but Turak bids him to stay, hoping for interesting conversation with him. Apparently Domon's interests in old artifacts has peaked Turak's interest (TGH, Ch. 29).
  • Padan Fain visits Turak and offers him the chest with the Horn of Valere. Much to Fain's annoyance Turak opens it without problem. Fain insists Turak sound the Horn and retake the Westlands for the Empress. Turak does not trust Fain and refuses. He will give the Horn as a gift to the Empress. He may reward Fain with the ruby dagger. Fain warns Turak against Rand, whom he names a Darkfriend (TGH, Ch. 34).

Relationships

Turak thinks Bayle Domon is interesting even if he suspects him of lying (TGH, Ch. 29; Ch. 34). He has Domon come to him every two or three days to tell tales of the lands he has visited (TGH, Ch. 43).

Turak does not trust Fain (TGH, Ch. 34).

He had a so'jhin named Huon (TGH, Ch. 29).

Quotes

"I cannot allow you to leave me, trader," the High Lord said. "In this shadowed land of oath-breakers, I find none who can converse with a man of sensibilities. But you are a collector. Perhaps your conversation will be interesting." (Turak to Bayle Domon after his capture; The Great Hunt, Chapter 29)

"'When one of my guards was found dead,' the shaven-headed man said calmly, 'I suspected the man who calls himself Fain. I have been suspicious of him since Huon died so mysteriously, and he has always wanted that dagger.' He held out his arms for the servant to remove his robe. Despite his soft, almost-singing voice, hard muscles roped his arms and smooth chest, which was bare to a blue sash holding wide, white trousers that seemed made of hundreds of pleats. He sounded uninterested, and indifferent to the blades in their hands. 'And now to find strangers with not only the dagger, but the Horn. It will please me to kill one or two of you for disturbing my morning. Those who survive will tell me of who you are and why you came.'" (Turak after he catches Rand's company trying to take the Horn of Valere; The Great Hunt, Chapter 45)

"'I suspected it might come to you and me.' Turak spun his blade easily, a full circle one way, then the other, his long-nailed fingers moving delicately on the hilt. His fingernails did not seem to hamper him at all. 'You are young. Let us see what is required to earn the heron on this side of the ocean.'" (Turak to Rand; The Great Hunt, Chapter 45)
