The next day Mat rides Pips beside Tuon riding Akein. Selucia has obtained a different horse. The Aes Sedai ride in the wagon with Metwyn driving. Mat sees a flock of ravens fly by and tells Tuon that they can be spies for the Dark One. Tuon thinks it is a children's tale and asks Mat if he believes that, "if you sleep on the Old Hob's Hill under a full moon then snakes will give you true answers to three questions, or that foxes steal people's skins and take the nourishment from food so you can starve to death while eating your fill?" Mat is unnerved by the references to the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn. Old Hob, Caisen Hob, was a name for the Dark One in Shandalle where Artur Hawkwing was born.
Mat remembers Egeanin telling him of Tuon being trained at intrigue and dissembling from infancy and can't understand what she wants with him. They come upon a strange looking village with a peddler driving his wagon through it. Mat realizes that the village is an ancient Shiotan village. Suddenly, the peddler and his horses start screaming as they sink into the ground, along with the entire village with nothing left but the road. Teslyn, Edesina and Joline, followed by Blaeric and Fen, start to examine the area and find nothing. The show people are afraid to go on. Luca starts trying to convince them that they need to continue onto Lugard but most just want to head back to Ebou Dar or go west. Thom, Juilin, Amathera, Noal and Olver join Mat. Thom asks Mat if he wants to make a bet on whether Luca will convince the people to continue to Lugard. Thom wins and they head out behind Luca and Latelle at a gallop. Tuon tells Mat that the dead walking is a sign that Tarmon Gai'don is near.
Lopin and Nerim serve dinner but no one feels like eating so Mat sends them to find Harnan and the Redarms and get drunk. Domon and Egeanin invite Amathera and Juilin to join them for wine in their wagon. Things are changing, and people are becoming more accepting. Thom starts reading the letter from Moiraine, so Mat asks him about it. The letter says that Thom should show Mat the letter only when he asks. In the letter Moiraine says that she will be confronting Lanfear soon but she will not die, and also that Thom, Mat and one other person must attempt to rescue her and that Mat knows the way. She wishes happiness for Lan and Nynaeve. The letter also says to remember the game of Snakes and Foxes. Mat is skeptical; he saw the doorway ter'angreal that she fell through melt. Olver says that Birgitte told him that the Tower of Ghenjei is the way to the lands of the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn and that to open the door you take a bronze knife and make the sign of Snakes and Foxes on the side of it anywhere. Noal describes the Tower of Ghenjei and says that it is on the Shadow Coast. Mat recognizes the description as the tower he saw while fleeing Shadar Logoth on Domon's ship. He says that Domon can lead them to it, but he warns them of how the Eelfinn and the Aelfinn may know what is in his mind and tells them the whole story about his encounters with the Eelfinn and Aelfinn. Mat agrees to go with Thom to rescue Moiraine and the last set of dice in his head stops.
