In the secluded place called the Two Rivers, the people of Emond's Field are preparing for a celebration. It is almost time for the Bel Tine festival. Rand, Mat, and Perrin are sitting and talking, when Egwene, who has passed her woman ceremony, comes into the inn and everybody celebrates her.

The night before the festival, a couple of strangers appear in the village – an Aes Sedai, Moiraine, and her Warder, Lan. The villagers are displeased to have an Aes Sedai in the village, believing that she will bring bad things to their peaceful life. The Aes Sedai's goal is to find the "prophesied one" and she believes it is one of the youths in this village. The Warder finds out that a Fade and Trollocs are hiding in the woods around the village.

The peaceful villagers are attacked by the Trollocs during the Bel Tine celebration, many of them get killed. Moiraine and Lan come to help them, killing many Trollocs in return, but destroying many buildings in the process.

In the aftermath, Moiraine helps heal some of the wounded and tells Rand, Mat, Perrin, and Egwene that one of them is the Dragon Reborn. She takes all four of them away from the village on the way to the White Tower in Tar Valon.

On their way from escaping the Trollocs, the group reaches Tarren ferry, where they cross the river, while leaving the Trollocs on the other side and losing them. The evening when they can finally get some rest from running, the Emond's Field four have a strange dream with a man with eyes of fire and Moiraine reveals to Egwene that she can channel the One Power. On their way to Whitebridge, the group meets a legion of Whitecloaks, but they part ways after hearing that there are Trollocs to the west.

During that night the group encounters the Trollocs again and hide in the dead city of Shadar Logoth. Because of the darkness that lurks in the shadow city, the group gets separated – Rand and Mat escape on the eastern side; Egwene and Perrin on the north; and Lan takes Moiraine out and heads east where they came from. Nynaeve has somehow tracked Lan and joins him in trying to heal Moiraine.

After the split, Rand and Mat reach a small mining village, Breen's Spring, where they encounter a Darkfriend, but are saved by Thom Merrilin, a gleeman, and continue traveling east together. Egwene and Perrin are trying to cross a windy plain, called the Caralain Grass, and finally reach a caravan of the Tuatha'an, the Traveling People.

Lan finds a group of Aes Sedai and brings Moiraine to them for healing. The group of Aes Sedai that Lan found, is the group that was sent to capture the man who had proclaimed himself the Dragon Reborn – Logain Ablar. He needs to be constantly shielded by two Aes Sedai from using the One Power. His followers were scattered when he was captured, but come back to free him. The Aes Sedai fight the group, which leads to Kerene and Liandrin, currently holding the shield on Logain, to get distracted which leads to him breaks their shield. Logain regains his power, kills Kerene, and in return is gentled on the spot by the remaining Aes Sedai lead by Liandrin.

With the Tuatha'an, Perrin is suspicious of them, but ultimately him and Egwene continue with the caravan heading east towards Tar Valon.

In an Andoran farm, Rand, Mat, and Thom have taken shelter by doing some work for the farmers. During the night, a Fade appears in the farm, kills the family and tries to kill Rand and Mat. Thom protects them, fighting the Fade while they try and escape, and is believed to have died by the Fade's hand too.

One month later, Moiraine, Lan, Nynaeve, and the rest of the Aes Sedai and Warders reach Tar Valon and parade the captured false Dragon Logain through the streets. Kerene's Warder Stepin is very sad after his Aes Sedai's death and, because he refuses to bond another of the Sisters, decides to end his own life. Lan, as his friend, grieves for him at his funeral.

Rand and Mat reach the city of Tar Valon around the same time and stay at an inn, but due to Mat's worsened health, decide to not go to the Tower. Rand meets an Ogier named Loial and they become friends. Loial brings Nynaeve to the inn and they reunite.

Egwene and Perrin got to Tar Valon by traveling with the Tuatha'an. Both of them get captured and tortured after encountering the same set of Whitecloaks they had met earlier. They escape with help from some wolves.
