In the secluded place called the Two Rivers, the people of Emond's Field are preparing for a celebration. It is almost time for the Bel Tine festival. Rand, Mat, and Perrin are sitting and talking, when Egwene, who has passed her woman ceremony, comes into the inn and everybody celebrates her.
The night before the festival, a couple of strangers appear in the village – an Aes Sedai, Moiraine, and her Warder, Lan. The villagers are displeased to have an Aes Sedai in the village, believing that she will bring bad things to their peaceful life. The Aes Sedai's goal is to find the "prophesied one" and she believes it is one of the youths in this village. The Warder finds out that a Fade and Trollocs are hiding in the woods around the village.
The peaceful villagers are attacked by the Trollocs during the Bel Tine celebration, many of them get killed. Moiraine and Lan come to help them, killing many Trollocs in return, but destroying many buildings in the process.
