General

Torean of House Andiama is a High Lord of Tear. He is plain-faced with large ears, a knobby potato-nose, thin eyebrows and a white-streaked dark beard in the fashion of a Tairen noble (TSR, Ch. 3). His eldest son is Estean (TFoH, Ch. 30).

Although he already is the wealthiest man in Tear, his interests rotate around increasing his amount of gold (TPoD, Ch. 21). He also leaves the impression of being a drunkard, because he likes to have one over the others (LoC, Ch. 4; TPoD, Ch. 22).

Timeline

  • He is looking at Rand's chamber until Perrin comes up. He leaves, but Perrin sees him talking to Berelain at the distance and making offers (TSR, Ch. 3).
  • He visits Rand in the morning and is thrown across his anteroom for making a suggestion that Rand does not like to hear (TSR, Ch. 7).
  • When Rand orders the taxes to be lowered, Torean and the other High Lords try to talk against it at first, but they could not oppose the Dragon Reborn (TSR, Ch. 8).
  • Sunamon and Meilan show Rand the treaty they have worked out with Torean. Rand is outraged when he reads it, because it would have two thousand Tairen soldiers overseeing the grain distribution, all under command of Torean. Rand orders a new one written and if it does not follow his conditions they will be hanged (TSR, Ch. 9).
  • Rand sends six High Lords with the Tairen army to Cairhien to restore order and feed the hungry. Torean is to finance all this and see if his money is "spent wisely" (TSR, Ch. 21).
  • On the morning after the battle against the Shaido, Torean is among the High Lords who want to speak to Rand (TFoH, Ch. 45).
  • Torean drunkenly tells young Cairhienin lordlings jokes after the first skirmish with the Seanchan (TPoD, Ch. 23).
  • He is with the assembled lords who bow to Rand on his return to Tear. Rand thinks it a pity he is alive while better men have died ({TGS, Ch. 42).

Relationships

Torean is one of the most dangerous High Lords to plot against Rand, but he does not trust the other High Lords enough to ally with them against Rand (TSR, Ch. 21). Aside from him, six others wanted to see Rand dead in Tear (TFoH, Ch. 45).

He is interested in Berelain, but she brushes him off (TSR, Ch. 3).

Torean schemed with Tedosian, Simaan and Hearne against Rand (LoC, Ch. 4).

Asmodean thinks that Torean is a dangerous man (TFoH, Ch. 4, Ch. 5).

Quotes

"Gold concerned Torean more than anything else, except possibly the privileges Rand had taken away from the nobles in Tear. He seemed particularly dismayed to learn there were no serving girls in the camp, and not so much as a village nearby where compliant farmgirls might be found. Torean had schemed against Rand every bit as often as Sunamon. Maybe even more than Gueyam, or Maraconn, or Aracome." (Rand about Torean; The Path of Daggers, Chapter 21)
