Elaida is described as a handsome woman with dark eyes and a stern face. Rand al'Thor compares her to Moiraine: "He had often thought of Moiraine as steel covered with velvet; with Elaida the velvet was only an illusion." She often has something to keep her hands busy; she prefers knitting, but she also has small ivory sculptures that she handles.

Elaida has the Talent of Foretelling. To date, we have knowledge of four Foretellings:

1. From this day Ando marches toward pain and division. The Shadow has yet to darken to its blackest, and I cannot see if the Light will come after. Where the world has wept one tear, it will weep thousands. (I, 40)

2. Pain and division come to the whold world, and this man [Rand] stands at the heart of it. (I, 40)

3. (while still an Accepted) The Royal line of Andor would be the key to defeating the Dark One in the Last Battle. (IV, 1)

4. The White Tower will be whole again, except for remnants cast out and scorned, whole and stronger than ever. Rand al'Thor will face the Amyrlin Seat and know her anger. The Black Tower will be rent in blood and fire, and sister will walk its grounds. (VII,Pro.)

Elaida a'Roihan is an ambitious woman. She uses the Power for her personal enjoyment by making the Palace gardens at Caemlyn bloom, then keeping blooming roses in her room at the Tower. she uses her power as Amyrlin to have a palace built for her on the Tower grounds.

Elaida deposed Suian Sanche after discovering Suian and Moiraine's plot to help Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn. She subsequently became Amyrlin herself. She uses her position to force Sisters to respect her by assigning extreme penances to them.

Although she puts on the appearance of being in control, she is being controlled by her Keeper, Alviarin. Elaind has ordered a hunt for the Black Ajah. She has sent a hostile party to kidnap Rand, which failed, and has sent an emissary to the Tower in exile.
