Mistress al'Vere leads Perrin and his company to the old sickhouse to meet the two Aes Sedai. The place is even more ramshackle than he remembers. He remembers both of them. The first one is Verin Mathwin, a Brown and one of the few sisters besides Moiraine who knows about Rand. The second one is a Green names Alanna Mosvani. He has seen her once but never met her. Marin al'Vere apologizes to the Aes Sedai for bringing them unannounced but Verin tells her it is all right. If she is surprised to see him in the company of an Ogier and three Aiel she doesn't show it.

Alanna agrees as long as she doesn't make it a habit. She wants to know if Perrin is alone but he replies with a question of his own. Why are you here? Both Faile and Marin disapprove of his attitude towards the Aes Sedai. Perrin's question stands though. Trollocs, Whitecloaks and Aes Sedai in the Two Rivers, that can't be a coincidence. The Aes Sedai explain that they were looking for girls who can channel. After Egwene and Nynaeve came to the White Tower is was clear that there had to be more. The Whitecloaks managed to kill one of Alanna's warders and are preventing anyone from leaving the Two Rivers. Perrin wants to know why they don't do something about the situation but even an Aes Sedai can only do so much.

Alanna notices he is injured and Bain tells her it happened when they came out of the Waygate. Verin had already guessed that was how the Trollocs came to the Two Rivers. Loial tells her the Waygate is not closed. Alanna heals Perrin and the other wounded in his company.

Tam and Abell join them in the sickhouse. The are glad to see Perrin and want to hear how their sons are doing. Perrin does not feel free to talk with the Aes Sedai present so the walk into the woods to talk. The joke a little about his beard and Faile. When they are out of earshot they exchange news. Tam and Abell went to Tar Valon to find out about them but they didn't get a lot of information. Tam tries to tell Perrin the bad news about his family too but Perrin says he already knows. Halfway through the conversation the spot a raven and kill it. Ravens seem to be everywhere in the Two Rivers at the moment. Tam also tells Perrin about a man who has been killing animals for no apparent reason. Perrin assumes this is Slayer but he doesn't mention it to the two men. Then the conversation turns to the whitecloaks. Perrin tells them he intends to free the people they hold and then turn the Two Rivers into a dying ground for Trollocs. Both Abell and Tam are troubled by these plans.

Dain Bornhald's Point of View:

Setting: Watch Hill, the Two Rivers

Characters: Dain Bornhald, Ordeith

Dain Bornhald leads his patrol back to the main Whitecloak camp near Watch Hill. The patrol has been ambushed by Trollocs. Eleven of his men didn't survive and a lesser force would surely have been butchered. Dain sees a pattern in the attacks.

Only the ones he leads personally are attacked. As the approach Watch Hill he see a group of Travelling People getting ready to move. He tells one of his lieutenants to go tell their Seeker, a man named Raen, that he will take his people south. He won't let anybody get out of the Two Rivers. His eye then wanders to the place where the prisoners are kept. He considers letting the Questioners have a go at them. Their stubborn refusal to cooperate is starting to irritate him. Ordeith has been pushing for that for a while now.

Entering the camp he notices that Ordeith is back from his last trip into the Two Rivers as well. Child Byar reports to him the men he sent along to keep an eye on Ordeith have been killed in a skirmish with Trollocs. Again. An angry Bornhald orders Byar to get Ordeith to him immediately.

Ordeith sticks to the story the two have been killed by Trollocs and not for the first time Bornhald wonders why the Lord Captain Commander sent this man along. The changing accent, the lying, the constant instance on violence to draw the three men they are looking for back home are making Bornhald nervous. Again Ordeith asks for a free hand. Bornhald sends him away without answering him, sick of the man and his madness.

Ordeith's Point of View:

Setting: Watch Hill, the Two Rivers

Characters: Ordeith

After meeting with Bornhald, Ordeith goes back to his own part of the camp. He feels one of the three they seek to the south somewhere. His plans are succeeding but more bad news needs to reach al'Thor if he is hurry back home. He returns to his tent and the Fade he recently captured. It seems the Fade is finally ready to do his bidding.
