General

Caire din Gelyn Running Wave is a clan Windfinder, as her eight earrings show. She serves Wavemistress Pelanna (KoD, Ch. 22). Caire is a beautiful woman, in the middle of her life, with big dark eyes, a straight nose and a strong chin (TPoD, Ch. 5). Caire is skilled with the One Power, at least so far as skills related to weather go. She’s a very proud, strong, and, to a degree, arrogant woman, which is probably dictated by her high status as a Clan Windfinder. Caire has a daughter who is very strong with the One Power, Talaan, and a sister she hates: Tebreille (WH, Ch. 11).

Timeline

  • The group rides towards the farm of the Kin; Caire, like the twenty other Atha’an Miere there, has problems riding a horse (TPoD, Ch. 3; Ch. 4).
  • Caire is one of the thirteen women to use the Bowl of the Winds. She leads the circle after Elayne and Nynaeve show her how to take control over it. The Windfinder doesn’t yield easily when Elayne tries to add her to the circle. Caire is very impatient and determined to use the Bowl and believes that “what Aes Sedai can’t do, she can” (TPoD, Ch. 5).
  • Caire is present at one of the lessons Nynaeve teaches to the Atha’an Miere as her part of the deal between the Aes Sedai and the Sea Folk. When she sees that her daughter, Talaan, has shielded Nynaeve, she is highly surprised (WH, Ch. 11).
  • The Atha’an Miere stay in Caemlyn to continue receiving lessons from the Aes Sedai. At the same time, they help Elayne by making gateways and Traveling to Tear and Illian in order to bring food supplies (CoT, Ch. 11; Ch. 12).
  • Caire is spared from having to stay in Andor to keep opening gateways for Elayne because she is a Windfinder of a Clan Wavemistress. Instead she leaves Caemlyn with Zaida and the three other Windfinders who are free to leave, including her sister Tebreille. Caire travels with Zaida for Illian for the gathering of the First Twelve of the Atha’an Miere after Nesta's death(CoT, Ch. 12; Ch. 15).
  • She is present at the meetings of the First Twelve of the Atha’an Miere, accompanying her Clan Wavemistress. Still, Caire is very upset by her daughter’s disappearance to go to study in the Tower and is determined to bring her back. In the opinion of the Atha‘an Miere, the Aes Sedai have “abducted“ Talaan (KoD, Ch. 22).

Relationships

Caire has a daughter, Talaan, who is almost as strong as Nynaeve in the One Power (and will surely become stronger once her talent is fully developed). In private they are affectionate towards one another, but Caire cannot risk showing favoritism in public. Talaan says that she’ll miss her mother dearly if she goes to the White Tower (WH, Ch. 11).

Tebreille is Caire’s blood sister. They hate each other with a bitterness achievable only between blood relatives (TPoD, Ch. 5). They ignore each other and whenever they are required to be at the same place, they avoid talking to each other. Their equal status among the Sea Folk is probably another reason for their mutual hatred.

Caire and Tebreille are equally worried about Talaan and this is the one thing that unites them (KoD, Ch. 22).

Miscellaneous

  • Caire is taller than her sister Tebreille (TPoD, Ch. 5).
  • Renaile din Calon was the only Windfinder with status higher than Caire. When in Ebou Dar with Nynaeve, Elayne, Aviendha and the rest of Aes Sedai, only two other women have the same status as her own (TPoD, Ch. 1).
  • She has trouble riding a horse, like all of the Atha’an Miere (TPoD, Ch. 3).

Quotes

"Today, we shall do what has not been done since the Breaking of the World, when our ancestors fought wind and wave gone mad. By the Bowl of the Winds and the mercy of the Light, they survived. Today, we will use the Bowl of the Winds, lost to us for more than two thousand years, and now returned. I have studied the ancient lore, studied the records of the days when our foremothers first learned the sea and the Weaving of the Winds, and the salt entered our blood. What is known of the Bowl of the Winds, I know, more than anyone else." (Caire; The Path of Daggers, Chapter 5)
