Summary

Setting: Arad Doman

Characters: Graendal, Nazran, Moghedien, Cyndane, Shaidar Haran

Graendal forges a letter to Rodel Ituralde bearing King Alsalam's seal. Nazran, a close cousin of the King, is to deliver it with the message that a Gray Man tried to prevent the letter from being carried to him. After he has left, a gateway opens and Moghedien steps through with a silver-haired woman she introduces as Cyndane. They came for Graendal to make her obey Moridin, the new Nae'blis, but Graendal thinks they are playing tricks.

When Shaidar Haran appears and introduces himself as the hand of the Dark One, Graendal considers her chances only for a moment. She kneels to him and receives her first orders from her new master, one of them being to visit Moridin.

Cadsuane's Point of View:

Setting: Cairhien

Characters: Cadsuane, Daigian, Kumira, Corgaide, Faeldrin, Merana, Bera, Alanna, Sorilea

Cadsuane is on her way to the Sun Palace with Daigian and Kumira. They discuss recent events until they arrive. Corgaide Marendevin, the Holder of the Keys in the Sun Palace, receives them and conducts Cadsuane to a sitting room. Faeldrin, Merana and Bera show up and question Cadsuane about why she is still coming, because they are afraid she means harm to Rand. She evades their questions and leaves Daigian and Kumira with them.

In the sitting room, Cadsuane sends for Alanna and picks up her sewing again. When the Arafellin sister shows up, she is irritated, since she has nothing new to tell about Rand and his whereabouts. When Sorilea comes in, she sends Alanna away and talks with Cadsuane. They both agree to make Rand able to laugh and cry again and swear a water oath on it.
