General

Pelivar Coelan is the High Seat of House Coelan, a powerful Andoran House (TFoH, Ch. 19; LoC, Ch. 10). Pelivar leads one of the most powerful Houses in Andor, more powerful than Aemlyn Carand, but not quite as powerful as Arathelle, Dyelin and Luan (LoC, Ch. 28; TPoD, Ch. 15).

He is lean, hard-eyed and dark-haired. He is losing his hair from the front. He has a surprisingly high voice (TPoD, Ch. 17).

Timeline

  • Davram Bashere tells Rand that Ellorien Traemane and Pelivar Coelan entered Caemlyn three days ago, with Dyelin in the countryside, but none has gone near the Inner city, and none of them have responded to Rand's invitations (LoC, Ch. 10).
  • Rand meets with Aemlyn, Arathelle, Dyelin, Ellorien, Luan and Pelivar to let them know that Elayne is on her way to Caemlyn. He dismisses them when Min arrives at the palace (LoC, Ch. 41).
  • By chance, Min sees Merana through one of the windows of a palace that belongs to Pelivar, and thus knows that they have been talking (LoC, Ch. 46).
  • Pelivar is still in Caemlyn. He, Dyelin and Luan arrest Naean and Elenia for proclaiming for the Lion Throne, and name Dyelin regent in Elayne's absence (ACoS, Ch. 7).
  • Gareth Bryne tells Egwene that there is an army north of them, made up of Andorans and Murandians. Pelivar is leading it, and Arathelle is with him. Bryne thinks that they mean to keep Egwene and the rebel Aes Sedai out of Andor. Egwene tells him to arrange a meeting with them (TPoD, Ch. 15).
  • Arathelle speaks for the Andorans, telling Egwene and the Sitters that they are there to make sure that there is not a war between Aes Sedai on Andoran soil. Pelivar tells Egwene that he would rather die defending his lands and people there than where his lands and people will die as well (TPoD, Ch. 17).
  • After the talking is over and the Andorans/Murandians and the Aes Sedai begin to talk, Egwene sees Pelivar and Talmanes talking and is both surprised and curious (TPoD, Ch. 18).
  • Talmanes tells Egwene that she has changed the border between Andor and Murandy; the Andoran nobles will stay where they are until the Salidar Aes Sedai leave, and after a month of them being there, the maps will begin to show that part of Murandy as belonging to Andor. Talmanes points out that the Murandians are fawning over Pelivar and the other Andoran nobles as much as they are the Aes Sedai. Egwene sees Cian, a Murandian noble, curtsey deeply to Pelivar (TPoD, Ch. 18).
  • Egwene manages to corner Pelivar. She asks him if he is not pleased that Elayne is on her way to Caemlyn. Pelivar replies flatly that Elayne has the right to put in her claim for the Lion Throne (TPoD, Ch. 18).
  • Birgitte tells Elayne and Dyelin that Pelivar crossed the border between Murandy and Andor four days ago. Aemlyn and Arathelle have also crossed the border, but the three are not traveling together. Dyelin tells Elayne that they might be moving back to their estates, and that if they keep moving further apart, they will know for certain. Elayne hopes that they are indeed going to their estates, and will not ride towards Caemlyn. Dyelin tells Elayne that if they begin moving towards Caemlyn, then they are hoping that Abelle, Ellorien and/or Luan will be joining them. Elayne says that they must find a way to stop them from reaching Caemlyn (CoT, Ch. 14).

Relationships

During the Succession, Pelivar supported Morgase for the throne. Later, on orders from Gaebril/Rahvin, Morgase has him exiled from Caemlyn, and thus he no longer wants a Trakand on the throne (TFoH, Ch. 19; TPoD, Ch. 28; CoT, Ch. 14).

Elayne speaks to Egwene of Pelivar fondly, like a favorite uncle (TPoD, Ch. 18). Pelivar, however, does not support Elayne for the throne (TPoD, Ch. 28). This surprises Egwene, because Elayne had been sure that Pelivar would support her (TPoD, Ch. 18).

Pelivar supports Dyelin for the throne, and has declared his support for her. Elayne thinks to herself that Aemlyn, Arathelle and Pelivar seem willing to try to force Dyelin onto the throne (CoT, Ch. 14).

Aviendha seems to think of Aemlyn, Arathelle and Pelivar as enemies (CoT, Ch. 14).

Elenia hopes that Pelivar might support her for the throne (CoT, Ch. 15).

Miscellaneous

  • As Morgase is preparing to leave Caemlyn, she thinks to herself that she will go to Pelivar or Arathelle, once she reasons out how she can explain away their exiles (TFoH, Ch. 19).
  • When Tallanvor tells Morgase that they must go to Gareth Bryne first, she thinks to herself that Bryne's presence will be a convincing argument when she has to make Pelivar and the others forget about her exiling them (TFoH, Ch. 19).
  • Morgase learns that Pelivar is not among the nobles who have knelt to Rand (LoC, Ch. 9).
  • During the meeting between the Andoran/Murandian nobles and the Salidar Aes Sedai, Arathelle, Aemlyn and Pelivar seem to think that Egwene is just mouthing the words the Sitters have put on her tongue (TPoD, Ch. 17).
  • Egwene thinks to herself that while Arathelle and Aemlyn hold more power than most of the men, it is Pelivar and Culhan who ride with the soldiers; she wonders what the men think of their "agreement", where the Salidar Aes Sedai will stay put for a month and then leave Murandy and not bother Andor (TPoD, Ch. 18).
  • Egwene tells the Sitters that Pelivar and Arathelle obviously doubt that they are who they say they are -- the Tower in exile -- or they would not have had the courage to tell the Aes Sedai that they could go no further (TPoD, Ch. 19).
  • Dyelin tells Elayne that her biggest worries at the moment are Aemlyn, Arathelle and Pelivar, who support Dyelin for the throne, and that Ellorien and/or Luan might join them (TPoD, Ch. 28).
  • When Elayne hears that Pelivar is standing against her, she thinks to herself that he might be acting for one of his daughters (TPoD, Ch. 28).
  • Elayne hopes that having the Borderland armies moving through Andor will force Arathelle, Luan and Pelivar to declare for her (WH, Ch. 27).

Quotes

Pelivar sprang to his feet. "The plain of it is, you must go another way." His voice was surprisingly high, but no less firm than Arathelle's. "If I must die to defend my lands and my people, then better here than where my lands and people die, too." (Pelivar to Egwene; The Path of Daggers, Chapter 17).

"Pelivar turned from taking a fresh cup of wine from a tray and started back, with a muffled oath, to keep from bumping into her; had she stood any closer, she would have had to stand on his boots.
