The Wheel of Time Companion has actual strength ranking for many of the characters, which is not always consistent with what we have seen from these quotations. For example, the books tell us Elayne and Egwene are stronger than Cadsuane, the Companion has this the other way round.

This is a list of all references to how strong a person in the One Power, or to behavior such as deference that is indicative of strength. We also have a page that organizes this information and groups people together who are likely of similar strength based on what people have said or thought about them

The degree to which a person is able to channel and how much of the One Power they can safely hold varies considerably. In general, men are stronger than women; while the weakest man and the weakest woman would be roughly equivalent, there are several levels of male strength on top of the female levels (Robert Jordan's Blog, Tuesday, October 4th, 2005). Some women, such as Morgase are barely able to channel at all (LoC, Prologue), while others such as Sharina and Lanfear may well have the maximum possible strength for any woman (CoT, Ch. 17; WH, Ch. 35). It is assumed that men show the same range of strengths, but this is not known, except that Rahvin believed that both he and Sammael were stronger than Lanfear (TFoH, Prologue).

The White Tower accepts approximately the top 62.5% (Tuesday, October 4th, 2005), though at the time of The Aiel War, only around 20% of novices were strong enough (NS, Ch. 3), a figure that had remained the same by the time Egwene and Nynaeve joined (TGH, Ch. 4). This discrepancy is likely explained by a reluctance to send away all but the very weakest until their training is complete and the stronger women progressing to Accepted and then Aes Sedai quicker than others. If male strength is compared, 64.5% of men have the level of strength that the White Tower will accept (Tuesday, October 4th, 2005).

  • A woman who had barely attained the shawl, doing so—many said—by an eyelash and a whisper? Daigian had to show deference to all other Aes Sedai. If two sisters met, Daigian was always the lesser. If more than two sisters met, Daigian served them tea. Before the more powerful sisters, she was expected to scrape and grovel" (Ch. 7).

  • She did an admirable job of imitating Egwene’s weave, and a gateway opened - Meidani, (Ch. 12).
  • She and Yukiri were near in power (About Saerin. Ch. 12)
  • She was strong in the power. Remarkably so; she would wear the shawl for certain, and as soon as she did, she’d be far above Siuan - Sharina, (Ch. 18)
  • Well, with this, I’m strong enough for Traveling - Siuan on Vora's Sa'angreal, (Ch. 41).

  • They saw a gateway made...it was Nesita (Ch. 18)

  • They each opened a large gateway -Flinn and Naeff, (Ch. 42).
  • These weaves should lend you unprecedented mobility – Katerine to Covarla and Narenwhin about Traveling (Ch. 13)*

Towers of Midnight

  • She was weaker in the Power, so she hadn’t slowed in aging as much as Sumeko (About Alise, ToM, Ch. 12)
  • Naeff was far more skilled at the process than she, but Nynaeve was stronger in the One Power (ToM, Ch. 15)
  • "...strong. Probably the strongest in the room" (Morgase on Edarra, compared to Masuri and Seonid)
  • "Powerful enough that most of the others would bow to her" (Chesmal, compared to the other Black Ajah Elayne captured, (Ch. 23)

  • Emarin...crafted the weave for a gateway (Ch. 56)

A Memory of Light

  • I'm weakest among them. Perhaps the weakest in the Black Tower (Androl, AMoL, Prologue).
  • Light you are strong (Androl to Pevara, AMoL, Prologue)

Robert Jordan's Blog

  • Regarding the percentage of women who could test for the shawl, it would be 62.5% of the bellcurve. I’ll leave the maths to you for an idle moment. The question doesn’t really apply to men, since the Black Tower accepts anyone who can learn to channel, but if the White Tower limits were applied, it would be roughly 65.4% of the bellcurve. Although, considering the effectiveness question, they should probably set it at the same 62.5%. Again, the maths are all yours.
  • Regarding the levels of male strength, while the weakest man and the weakest woman would be roughly equivalent, you might say that there are several levels of male strength on top of the female levels. Remember to integrate this with what I’ve said elsewhere about effectiveness, though.
