General

Dannil Lewin is a young man from the Two Rivers. He is four years older than Egwene, which would put him in his early twenties during the series (TEotW, Ravens Prologue).

Dannil is repeatedly described as skinny, and the word "beanpole" is used on him many times (TEotW, Ravens Prologue; TSR, Ch. 42). He has a thrusting beak of a nose (TEotW, Ravens Prologue; WH, Ch. 2; CoT, Ch. 5). After the Two Rivers becomes flooded with refugees, he grows a Taraboner-style mustache, which nearly hides his mouth and makes his nose look even bigger than it is (LoC, Ch. 45; ACoS, Ch. 2; WH, Ch. 2).

Dannil is one of the Two Rivers men to join Perrin. He seems to be the leader of the men that Perrin brings with him to Caemlyn, and later to Ghealdan; often it is mentioned, "Dannil and the Two Rivers men," or such things like that. After Faile's capture, Perrin thinks to himself that he wants to go look for Faile, and leave Dannil to deal with Arganda and Masema (WH, Ch. 2). It is also to Dannil that Perrin usually gives his orders.

Timeline

  • Wil and Ban al'Seen and Dannil and Tell Lewin join Perrin and company to rescue the Cauthons and Luhhans from the Whitecloaks. When Gaul, Bain, and Chiad appear, all four of them begin hastily nocking arrows, and the Aiel veil themselves. Perrin has to straighten it out. The Lewins and al'Seens are very unsettled (TSR, Ch. 33).
  • Perrin puts Dannil and Ban each in charge of half of the young men who have joined them (TSR, Ch. 33).
  • After the Cauthons and Luhhans are rescued, Perrin and the Two Rivers men ride away from the Whitecloak camp, drawing the Whitecloaks after them so that everyone else can get away. Perrin then announces that they are going to hunt Trollocs (TSR, Ch. 33).
  • When Perrin and the Two Rivers men are resting at the Aybara farm, Dannil tells Perrin that Faile and Luc have arrived from Emond's Field (TSR, Ch. 40).
  • During the first skirmish with Trollocs, 32 Trollocs are killed, and Dannil, Ban, and the others are ready to celebrate a great victory until they find what is in the Trollocs' cookpot. Most of them ran off to throw up or cried openly (TSR, Ch. 40).
  • After Gaul announces that there are thirty Trollocs nearby and Luc leaves, Perrin arranges his men. Dannil and Ban are still each in charge of half, with Bili al'Dai, Kenley Ahan, Wil al'Seen, and others leading ten or so (TSR, Ch. 40).
  • Somehow the Trollocs get ahead of them, and twenty-seven of Perrin's men die. Dannil survives (TSR, Ch. 40).
  • Perrin and his men find a Tinker camp and stay there overnight. The Tinker women bring the men food (TSR, Ch. 41; Ch. 42).
  • Perrin and his men ride back to Emond's Field. Perrin is in pain, but he refuses to show it, since Dannil, Ban and the others are walking with their heads up, and he does not want to be the first to slump (TSR, Ch. 42).
  • Upon reaching Emond's Field, all of the Two Rivers men show their pride by striding even when they limp, or sitting up straighter in their saddles. Family members and friends exclaim over them (TSR, Ch. 43).
  • As Perrin prepares to defend Emond's Field against the first Trolloc attack after he arrives, Dannil and the others who were with him on the Trolloc raid surround him and Faile, all of them carrying bows. The Aes Sedai have Healed the men who were seriously injured, but Dannil, Tell, and the others who were only minimally hurt are still limping and wearing bandages (TSR, Ch. 43).
  • After the Trolloc attack and the arrival of the Tinkers, Dannil and the others follow Perrin around. After the Whitecloaks arrive and Perrin agrees to let them stay to keep an eye on him, he thinks that maybe it will not be such a bad idea to have Dannil and the others following him around, and that he will not be able to sleep easy without someone guarding his doors (TSR, Ch. 45).
  • Dannil tells Perrin that the Whitecloaks have brought in a man who wants to talk to him. The man is hurt bad, and won't talk to anybody but Perrin. Dannil readies ten Companions to escort Perrin. After Perrin speaks to the man, who only says "we are coming" before he dies, Dannil tells Perrin that the man was found three or four miles south, and that there are Trollocs scattered around in little bunches. He thinks that they may be giving up. Dannil and the Companions escort Perrin home (TSR, Ch. 53).
  • Dannil's name is not directly mentioned, but it is mentioned that the Companions fight in the big battle against the Trollocs, so it can be assumed that Dannil was there as well. Perrin tells the Companions that if it all goes wrong, they are to get the women and children out of Emond's Field (TSR, Ch. 56).
  • Dannil is one of the Two Rivers men who accompany Perrin and Faile to Caemlyn. When they get near to Caemlyn and Vilnar Barada tells Perrin that no noble may enter the city with more than twenty men, he tells Dannil to have the men set up camp in a meadow they passed about three miles back (LoC, Ch. 45).
  • When Rand leaves for Cairhien, taking Perrin and Faile with him, Perrin wants to send a note to Dannil, telling him to have the Two Rivers men follow. He also considers having Dannil bring the Two Rivers girls who are with Alanna and Verin, but is talked out of it (LoC, Ch. 49).
  • When Rand is taken by the Aes Sedai, and his allies are preparing to rescue him, Perrin thinks to himself that Dannil and the Two Rivers men cannot be more than halfway to Cairhien yet, since they are laden down with wagons (LoC, Ch. 53).
  • Dannil and the Two Rivers man actually have abandoned the wagons in their hurry to catch up with Perrin. Kiruna, Bera, and the other Salidar Aes Sedai catch up with them, saying that Alanna knows where to find Rand. Dannil assumes that Perrin will be where Rand is, and so he accompanies the Aes Sedai. Perrin is glad to be reunited with his men (LoC, Ch. 54).
  • During the battle to free Rand, Perrin wants to keep the Two Rivers men back so that they have a better chance of escape, but Dannil insists that they must be within three hundred paces for their bows to be effective. Once Perrin and the Asha'man reach Rand and they are all protected by the dome of saidin, Perrin tells Rand that even if Dannil and the Wise Ones held back the way they were supposed to, once they see the dome they will not leave (LoC, Ch. 55).
  • Dannil is with Perrin after the battle at Dumai's Wells. He is relieved when he learns that Taim and the majority of the Asha'man will not be accompanying them to Cairhien. When Perrin speaks with Rand about the Aes Sedai prisoners, he says he is worried, and that he can see Dannil, Ban, and fifty others trying to help the Aes Sedai escape, if they knew how (ACoS, Ch. 2).
  • Perrin and the Two Rivers men accompany Rand when he Travels to Cairhien. The Two Rivers men remain outside the city while Rand and Perrin enter, and Perrin later sends Aram to tell Dannil to have the Two Rivers men enter the city (ACoS, Ch. 3; Ch. 4; Ch. 6).
  • Dannil and the Two Rivers men accompany Perrin when he Travels to Ghealdan. Dannil leads the Two Rivers men through the Gateway (ACoS, Ch. 27).
  • Dannil's name is not directly mentioned in "The Path of Daggers", but "the Two Rivers men" are mentioned time and again whenever most of Perrin's chapters are read (TPoD, Ch. 7-Ch. 10).
  • When Perrin returns from Abila and learns that Faile has been kidnapped, Dannil tells Perrin that by the time he and the Two Rivers men found out what had happened, the Ghealdanin were ready to attack the Aiel who traveled with Perrin because they knew it was Aiel who had taken Alliandre, along with the others. Dannil sent off Jondyn Barran, Hu Marwin, and Get Ayliah to scout around, had the Cairhienin and Perrin's servants make a circle with the carts and stay inside it, and then brought the rest of the men out to wait for Perrin, the men ringing the crest of the hill while the Winged Guards of Mayene and the Ghealdanin soldiers faced each other. He says that he thought the Ghealdanin were going to charge them, until Berelain's men showed up. He says he didn't know what else he could do, but Perrin tells him that he did right (WH, Ch. 2).
  • Perrin looks for Dannil, and finds him at one of the fires. Perrin asks him if he knows where Masema's men are, and Dannil replies that they are about three miles south and west. He then tells Dannil to have everybody start towards where the ambush was, and that they'll ride until they have a better idea of where they are going. He wants Dannil to have messages sent to the Berelain and Arganda as well, so that the Mayeners and Ghealdanin can begin moving. He mentions to Dannil to have the Wise Ones stay close to them, because he's afraid that Arganda might still try to put some of them to the question in an attempt to find out where Alliandre is. Perrin says for Dannil to be as firm as he dares, and Dannil grimaces; Perrin thinks that likely he would rather try being firm with the Women's Circle (WH, Ch. 6).
  • When the Aiel bring back evidence, in the form of torn clothing, that Faile and the others are alive, Dannil wants to know what they will do next. Perrin replies that they will be Traveling forty miles south. He also tells Dannil that he needs to find Masema. Dannil doesn't want Perrin going among Masema's men alone, since it would be dangerous. Masema happens to show up just then, taking the decision out of Perrin's hands (WH, Ch. 6).
  • As Perrin makes his way through the camp, Dannil stands and asks if Perrin has any orders for him. When Perrin replies that he doesn't, Dannil looks relieved and sits back down to have breakfast (CoT, Ch. 5).
  • After finding traces of Darkhounds, Perrin sends Aram to tell Dannil that there were Darkhounds nearby (CoT, Ch. 6).
  • Dannil leads Jur Grady and a dozen Two Rivers men to where Perrin is. The Two Rivers men give Perrin plenty of room, giving him and Berelain embarrassed glances. Grady weaves a Gateway and they go to scout the Shaido camp. Dannil suggests that they sneak into the Shaido camp at night, like Perrin snuck into the Whitecloak camp back in the Two Rivers (CoT, Ch. 8).
  • As Perrin leaves for So Habor, he tells Dannil to keep an eye on Arganda, ordering him to do what he has to in order to keep Arganda from doing anything stupid, so long as it doesn't come to blows (CoT, Ch. 25).
  • When Perrin returns from So Habor, he sees Dannil leaving the Aiel tents, walking fast, with Sulin and Edarra following him. Dannil tells Perrin that the Maidens have brought in five Shaido. Arganda took them to the Ghealdanin tents to put them to the question, and Masema is with them. Perrin asks Edarra why she didn't stop Arganda; he knows that Dannil could have done nothing, but that the Aiel Wise Ones are a different matter (CoT, Ch. 27).
  • When Tam leaves, Dannil takes charge of the Two Rivers men (ToM, Ch. 30).
  • When Perrin goes to his trial, Faile asks Dannil to be ready to rescue him. He doesn't like it but had already arranged for Grady to pull Perrin out (ToM, Ch. 30).
  • In the battle at Caemlyn, he is Tam's second in command (AMoL, Ch. 8).
  • He brings Tam news that his forces are to be reinforced with infantry banners from the Legion of the Dragon (AMoL, Ch. 37).
  • After the Horn of Valere is blown, he holds the Dragon banner (AMoL, Ch. 39).

Relationships

Dannil is Flann Lewin's nephew. He and Tell Lewin look so much like Flann that they could have been his sons instead of his nephews (TSR, Ch. 33).

Dannil's relation to Tell Lewin is not clear. At one point, Tell is referred to as Dannil's cousin (TSR, Ch. 42). However, later he is referred to as his brother (LoC, Ch. 54). Dannil looks almost exactly like Tell (LoC, Ch. 54).

Dannil and Ban al'Seen are cousins. They look very much alike (ACoS, Ch. 2).

Dannil is one of Perrin's men, and seems to lead Perrin's Two Rivers forces, but after Faile's capture he gives Perrin a lot of room (CoT, Ch. 8).

Like the other Two Rivers men, Dannil almost always calls Faile "Lady Faile" (WH, Ch. 2).

Dannil grows more formal with Perrin (acquiring polish" as he calls it (KoD, Ch. 29).


Miscellaneous

When several of the older men salute Perrin, he thinks to himself that Dannil and the others are one thing, but these men are half again his age and more (TSR, Ch. 44).

Perrin thinks that Dannil should shave those "fool mustaches" (ACoS, Ch. 27).

Dannil ducked his head, clearing his throat. "Pardon, Mistress al'Vere," he said hastily. "Pardon, Wisdom. Sorry to burst in, but I've a message for Perrin." He hurried to the table of men as if afraid the women would stop him again. "The Whitecloaks brought in a man who wants to talk to you, Perrin. He won't talk to anybody else. He's hurt bad, Perrin. They only brought him to the edge of the village. I don't think he could make it as far as the inn." (Dannil to Alsbet, Daise, and Perrin; The Shadow Rising, Chapter 53)

Dannil glanced at the Aes Sedai and stroked his mustaches furiously. "We started out like you said, Lord Perrin, and as fast as we could. I mean, we left the wagons and all, since it seemed there must be some reason for you to leave so quick. Then Kiruna Sedai and Bera Sedai and the others caught us up, and they said Alanna could find Rand, the Lord Dragon, I mean, and since you went with him, I thought sure you'd be wherever he was, and no way to tell us if you'd gone from Cairhien, and... " He drew a deep breath. "Anyway, it seems they were right, weren't they, Lord Perrin." (Dannil to Perrin; Lord of Chaos, Chapter 54)

Dannil Lewin trotted up, chewing worriedly at the thick mustache that made his nose look even bigger than it was. He had his bow in one hand and was sliding an arrow back into the quiver at his belt. "I didn't know what else to do, Perrin," he said in a jerky voice. Dannil had been at Dumai's Wells, and faced Trollocs back home, but this was outside his view of the world. "By the time we found out what happened, those Ghealdanin fellows were already starting this way, so I sent off Jondyn Barran and a couple of others, Hu Marwin and Get Ayliah, told the Cairhienin and your servants to make a circle with the carts and stay inside it -- had to just about tie up those folks who're always following the Lady Faile around; they wanted to go off after her, and not a one of them knows a footprint from an oak tree -- then I brought everybody else here. I thought those Ghealdanin might charge us, until the First got there with her men. They must be crazy, thinking any of our Aiel would hurt the Lady Faile." "Won't be the first time we've faced long odds," Dannil said. "What do we do, my Lord?" (Dannil to Perrin; Winter's Heart, Chapter 6)

"You go among that filth alone, my Lord, and you'll need luck," Dannil replied. "I heard some of them talking about you. Said you're Shadowspawn, because of your eyes." His gaze met Perrin's golden eyes and slid sideways. "Said you'd been tamed by the Dragon Reborn, but still Shadowspawn. You ought to take a few dozen men to watch your back."
